Most guys will agree, beer is the greatest invention of all time. Smells amazing tastes amazing, and after putting down one too many – you feel fantastic. In all honesty, we drink beer because we love the way it tastes, but that feeling is what keeps us coming back. With the craft beer revolution upon us, microbreweries around the world are all focusing on creating high quality, handcrafted beers. All happen to be considerably higher in alcohol content (ABV) as well. After throwing back a few 10% ABV Double IPAs on the weekend, it got us thinking, which are the world’s strongest beers?
List of Strongest Beers
BrewDog Watt Dickie
This is an amplified IPA masquerading as a spirit. A dead spirit, a faux spirit, a brand new spirit. Born as an India Pale Ale, Watt Dickie then experiences patent pending (and therefore for now secret) freezing alchemy which transforms the beer into a high octane roller coaster of flavor, craftsmanship, originality, and audacity. The process condenses & amplifies the flavor, body, and mouthfeel causing full-bodied malty, hoppy rock ‘n roll opulence that is unlike anything you (or anyone else) has ever tasted before.
Struise Black Damnation VI – Dirty
All of the beers on this list were created with one goal in mind – to make the world’s strongest beer. There is a handful, but, that actually taste great. This can be one of them. This Imperial Stout is pitch black and carries some nice notes of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, as well as peat for you whiskey enthusiasts out there. This beer still tastes like a beer, carbonated having a good rocky head, and it’s not overwhelming, although you can definitely taste the alcohol.
Struise Zombinator vintage 2012 on steroïds aka Zeus – 01
Blend developed for 2 years in HBL Chateau Margaux oak, ex-wine barrel. Double Eisbocked to 40% abv and aged for another year in the exact same barrel.
Sink The Bismarck
This quadruple IPA resembles some kind of sweet soup and was crafted as part of another brewski battle BrewDog got into. The name of the beer, an obvious reference to the sinking of the German battleship, was selected because at the time it was produced it knocked off a German beer as the world’s strongest. Since Berlin is in fact in Germany, a Berlin lab asserts the brew only clocks in at 29% alcohol by volume, yet, using our basic familiarity with remedial geography, we take these reports with a grain of salt.
Struise C-DOS Cuvée Delphine on Steroids aka Pablo Escobar
The strongest beer in Belgium. A masterpiece Urbain Coutteau. Cuvée Delphine 2010 barrel aged for a year in 4 Roses bourbon barrels double eisbocked to 41% abv. Barrel aged additionally for 4 years on Arran Lochranza barrel. That is about beer using an enormous amount of whiskey scents and flavors. Not for pussies, nor beer geeks.
Dubbed “the strongest beer on earth,” Schorschbräu’s Schorschbock 57 is a mindboggling 110-proof bock. Anything higher would break Germany’s 500-year-old Beer Purity Law. Tasters have described this beer as everything to overpowering and breathtaking from nutty and smoky. Made in 2011, Schorschbock 57 was a limited edition brew that yielded only 36 bottles.
Another name that you’ll be seeing more than once, Koelschip doesn’t mess around in regards to strong beers. Like several of the other beers on the list, this thing is difficult to get your hands on and was a brew that is limited. Because as we understand, it tastes more like cough syrup than beer don’t worry, though.
Brewdog’s The End of History
Leave it to the Scots to come up with one of the most powerful and strangest brews out there. BrewDog’s powerful 55% ABV blond Belgian ale is infused with nettles and juniper berries, but don’t expect a light and fruity taste. This beer continues to be described as having tastes of mushrooms, soy sauce, beef, leather, and tobacco. The kicker? Each bottle is presented in a stuffed squirrel or stoat that has been created by a taxidermist for this limited edition beer. Do n’t stress, animal lovers: The firm claims all the animals used in the creation of this beer were a result of roadkill.
Start the Future
Now, the world’s most effective beer after taking the title from the End of History, Begin the Future will not have to be sipped at 120 proof it could burn off your larynx. You’re speaking absinthe degrees here. Rumors have swirled that ‘t Koelschip added this jet engine fuel and whiskey together to take the name away from BrewDog while never affirmed.
Due South Category 5 IPA – Grapefruit
The most powerful IPA in the Due South Category collection, the Cat 5 is big on hops and big on flavor. Clocking in at 8.5% ABV and 96 IBU’s, the first bands of malts will make way for the surge of hops on the palate. Designed for the actual hophead, this is not a beer for the faint of heart. Interesting Fact: There’s no intriguing fact. This beer is fascinating enough on its own.
